- Emerald gemstone - birthstone for May
May’s birthstone is the velvety green emerald, amongst the most precious of all gems. The emerald represents loyalty, faithfulness and friendship - and is probably why in the Wizard of Oz Dorothy ends up at the Emerald city rather than Oz city!
Emeralds have been treasured throughout history from the Romans to medieval Europe. Some of the finest emeralds are found around Muzo and Chivor in Columbia where they occur in veins within dark shales and limestones. Mined by the ancient indigenious civilisations this was the origin of the large emeralds that came into Europe and Asia following the spanish conquest.

The Millenium Star - 203.04 carats, the second largest diamond ever
Birthstones are a popular tradition where particular gems are linked to months of the year and are believed to bring luck to those birthdays they represent.
Well I have to say that those of you with April birthdays are probably the luckiest when it comes to birthstones. Yes you lot get the best of the bunch with diamonds!!
Named from the Greek adamas, meaning invicible, diamonds were known in Europe from Roman times. They were treasured initially for their hardness and their percieved magical qualities and in the Middle Ages enjoyed a fearful reputation, powdered, as a poison. However only small quantities reached Europe until the renaissance. By the early sixteenth century the development of diamond points and table-cuts allowed the brilliance of the stone to be appreciated. From the 1620 the rose cut was used in Europe, with a flat base beneath a dome of triangular facets. Greater sparkle was achieved through the brilliant cut with its 58 facets, first appearing in the late seventeenth century. With slight modifications this remains the most typical cut to this day.
Extract from Jewels and Jewellery, Clare Phillips
Diamond is the most intensively mined and carefully graded of all gem minerals. The quality of the gem diamond is assessed by a system known as the ‘Four C’s’: colour, clarity, cut and carat weight.
Diamonds vary from colourless, through a range of yellows and browns, to green, blue, pink and a very rare red. Colourless diamonds are considered the most valuable.
From Marilyn Monroe to Shirley Bassey - Diamonds really are a girls best friends! ………. But don’t worry if your birthday’s not in April there are beautiful stones for everyone! Next month is May and one of my favourites the Auamarine.

I‘ve been wanting to do a few more hand cut pieces for a while. These new earrings are pierced from 8mm silver sheet and frame pale blue amazonite briolettes.
Since finishing these the other day they are now my favourites and I’m digging out some other gemstones to use with similar designs perhaps on textured silver. They should be on sale on the website shortly but at the moment you can find them at notonthehighstreet.com

In the spirit of the Baftas we went to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button yesterday. Really great film and I’d highly recommend it, the story and cinematography are captivating. As the film travels through the decades so do the fashions - one period that really stood out for me was the part with Tilda Swinton in Russia and her amazing outfits with their beautiful detailing. Anyway I’ve decided to do a bit more research into the style of this period in Russia and try and come up with some jewellery designs.

I recently made some bespoke pearl and 18ct gold jewellery for a client and this morning received a really nice thank you card which I thought I’d share.
“Dear Sarah, I am writing to thank you for making the beautiful pearl jewellery I recently ordered from your collection. You are very skilled in the craft and my mother is very pleased with her gift.
With thanks, Lynne Addicott “
